Billing itself as the Horse Capital of the World, Lexington doesn’t horse around when it comes to capitalizing on dining ambiance within historic atmosphere, whether serving down home country ham and spoon bread, ethnic tantalizers, or haute cuisine worthy of royalty. Billy’s Bar-B-Q, big on out western Kentucky-style hickory pit barbeque, also is renowned for breaded, fried pickle slices called “dillickles.” Hailed by Southern Living as a top place to shop, Flag Fork Herb Farm’s cafe overlooks its charming gardens. Annabelle’s, in downtown’s historic district, serves Kentucky Egg Roll appetizers of barbecue pork and vinegar slaw. Also downtown, with sidewalk dining weather permitting, Le Deauville’s authentic French cuisine transports patrons to Normandy. Malone’s has a reputation for steak and seafood, and Jonathan at Gratz Park, in downtown’s historic Gratz Park Inn, is known all around for King Crab cornbread cakes. Marikka’s, specializing in German cuisine, invites patrons to try all their 500 brews to get their names on the ceiling above the bar. Metropol, featuring elegant upscale fare including Lobste Ravioli, is housed in a small white brick building dating to 1825. Dudley’s, in a restored 1881 school bulding near downtown’s business district, attracts patrons with its wine list and cozy bar. Chains range from Domino’s Pizza to Red Lobster and Outback Steakhouse.
